Press-On Nails: How to Choose and Apply Them

Nails, November 4, 2026

Press-on nails last longest when they fit your nail from edge to edge and go on clean, dry nails. Glue gives longer wear, usually one to two weeks, and adhesive tabs last a few days but are easier to remove. Sizing is the step most people rush, and it's the step that matters most.

Choosing a set

Shape. Short rounded or oval tips tend to be the easiest for beginners. Our nail shapes guide compares them all.

Length. Go shorter than you think if you're new to them. Long tips catch on things and pop off more easily.

Curve. Tips with a curve that's close to your nail bed sit better. Flat nails and very curved nails can both have trouble.

Sizes. Check how many sizes are in the box. More sizes give you a better chance of a good fit.

Step by step

  1. Size first. Lay out a tip for each finger before you do anything else. Sally Beauty and other guides say that sizing comes first. The tip should cover your nail edge to edge without touching skin or the cuticle.
  2. File to fit. If a tip's slightly too wide, file its sides a little at a time.
  3. Clean and dry. Remove old polish. Wash your hands and let them dry fully. Nails take on water and expand slightly, so apply when your hands have been dry for a while.
  4. Prep. Push back cuticles gently, buff lightly and wipe the nail to remove oil.
  5. Apply. With glue, use a thin layer as the product directs. With tabs, press the tab on and peel off the backing.
  6. Press and hold. Start at the cuticle end, then press downward, and hold it firmly.
  7. Wait. Most guides suggest keeping your hands out of water for about an hour. Bedtime is a good time to apply.

Taking them off

Don't pull them off. Tearing a press-on can take layers of your nail with it. Follow the directions on the box. Warm soapy water can loosen tabs, and glue may need a longer soak. Be patient, and repeat if needed.

If your skin or nails get sore, swollen or irritated, stop wearing them and see a clinician.

Reusing a set

Tabs make this easier. Clean off residue, check for damage and store each tip in order, ideally in the original tray. A set you can use several times changes the value quite a bit.

Press-ons or salon?

Press-ons give you salon-style designs without an appointment, and you can remove them right away. A salon service lasts longer and takes less work. Compare with gel, dip and acrylic, and if your press-ons need help staying in place, see how to make a manicure last longer.

Questions people ask

How long do press-on nails last?
Sources commonly say one to two weeks with glue and a few days with adhesive tabs. Wear depends on prep, fit and how much your hands are in water.
Can I reuse press-ons?
Often, especially with tabs, since they leave less residue. Clean and store them carefully.
Why do mine keep popping off?
Poor fit and oily or damp nails are common reasons. Check that each tip sits edge to edge on the nail, and prep carefully.
